Upcycling old shoes and a little boho magic — in this tutorial, I’ll show you how to transform ordinary vintage cowboy boots into a stylish designer item inspired by the Free People aesthetic.
Why remake shoes?
Fashion is increasingly turning to sustainability and reuse. If you have a pair of old cowboy boots lying around (or you found them at a thrift store), don’t rush to say goodbye to them. With a little creativity, they can be transformed into an original item that will become the focal point of any outfit.
What you’ll need:
- A pair of cowboy or leather boots (preferably with a slightly vintage look);
- Leather or fabric straps of different textures;
- Bracelets, braided cords, ropes;
- Metal fittings (chains, rings, rivets);
- Leather glue or strong thread with a needle;
- Scissors, pliers, lighter for processing edges.

- Preparing the base
Clean the boots of dust and dirt. Make sure the leather is in good condition and not cracked. If necessary, you can soften it with a special cream or oil.
- Selecting decorative elements
This is the most creative part. Create compositions from straps, chains, and ribbons. Mix textures: smooth leather, woven fabric, metal. Get inspired by Free People’s looks — they always have a sense of light carelessness, bohemianism, and individuality.
- Fastening
Wrap the boots with straps—at the top of the bootleg, slightly below, or in the middle. Secure them with glue or sew them carefully if the straps are thin. Decorate the composition with decorative fittings.
- Final touches
Make sure all elements are securely attached. If necessary, trim any protruding edges and treat them with a lighter to prevent fraying. Add small accents: pendants, coins, beads.
