Current DIYs in Progress: UV Resin and Milk Carton Crafts

Sorry for that little hiatus there!

My laptop’s internal battery overheated and put my computer out of commission for awhile, so it’s been unusable over the weekend while I waited for the replacement battery to arrive.  Now it’s installed and everything seems to be running smoothly again.

So I took some time to work on some DIYs, including my new favorite material, UV resin.  So simple and easy to use – and perfect for the bright, sunny weather we’re having here in Portland!  It cures within minutes, is completely clear, and layers images and charms so beautifully.  I finally found an equivalent available here in the U.S., so once I’m done testing it I’ll be sharing the tutorial with everyone!  The above are just some pieces I put together quickly…and will likely be listing in my Etsy shop once I relaunch that.
Given that I couldn’t use my computer, I spent much of the weekend also having some quality family time.  Yesterday I helped my son make a DIY bird feeder out of an old milk carton, some twigs, and some buttons.  So far the birds in our garden haven’t noticed it…but it’s just a matter of time…

DIY Sparkly Geode Earrings

I finally finished a pair of earrings this weekend that I’ve been working on for so long…I had attempted making them numerous times before but just couldn’t seem to get them exactly right.

I’ve always been drawn to the rough imperfections in natural stones and crystals, far more so than anything ever cut or polished by humans.  Geodes are the perfect example of this: the jagged, rough crystals inside that are at once both perfectly symmetrical and so perfectly without order.

I surrounded two halves of a split geode crystal (technically a thunderegg, I guess) with black epoxy resin; then hand-set hematite-colored Swarovski crystals around the perimeters.  Pewter French hooks finish off the earrings.

Given their sparkliness, contours, and depth I found they were incredibly hard to photograph late in the day and on my own, in the mirror.  I’ll have to try when it’s nice and bright outside!

I’m also going to experiment with another pair, this time with Silver Shade Swarovskis around the geodes.  I just couldn’t decide whether the dark hematite gray or crystal-like Silver would look better!  There’s something I like about the smoky gray color glinting against the black resin, though.

Hope you guys had a great weekend!

My Cross Jewelry Featured on Shout Out to You!

Yay!  I think this is the first time I’ve seen a photo of someone wearing one of the pieces I’ve made.  Joni looks absolutely beautiful, and I love the sweatpants combination with my cross rings!

On her right hand: Silver Itty Bitty Cross Ring.  On her left hand: Silver Sideways Cross Single Finger Ring (Silver is currently unavailable, but Gold Double-Finger Sideways Cross Rind and the Gold Single-Finger Sideways Cross Ring still are.)

Joni has a great sense of style and always looks so chic!  Check out her blog:

Shout-Out to You

Thanks, Joni, for featuring my rings!  I hope you like them!
(And if anyone else out there has posted photos of themselves on their blogs wearing any of my pieces from my Etsy shop…send them my way, and I’ll feature you here!;-)

Monica's Fringe Necklace from the Create Couture Challenge

Monica from Grinding Metal Gears was chosen as the winner from among the many Create Couture Challenge commenters.  She wrote that she liked my double-fringe necklace tutorial – so I sent her the finished product!

She shared her photo wearing the necklace on her blog (where she has a number of her DIY creations, recipes, and yummy-looking food photos!).  I am so glad that she likes the necklace – it compliments her so well – and she looks so lovely in it!

Congrats Monica and I hope you enjoy it!:-)

Rock Candy Rings

A couple rings that I’ve made recently:

Quartz spikes set in sterling silver
Rose quartz chips in sterling silver
Amethyst cluster on pewter filigree

I’m thinking about adding these styles of rings to my Etsy shop…thoughts?

Though I can’t take them off…I just love all this chunky sparkle on my hands!
