DIY Links of the Week 12.12 – 12.25.11

Written on 12.27.2011 by carlyjcais in DIY

DIY Links of the Week 12.12 12.25.11I hope all of you had a lovely holiday!  Mine was great, and could only have been improved by me not being sick.  I came down with a horrible cold on Christmas Day (probably staying up too late wrapping all those presents??!).  Anyway, I’m going to make an early night of it tonight, and hope that tomorrow will bring some improvement in my sore throat and aching joints.  Ugh.

In any case, there’s been some great DIY’s floating around the Internet, so if any of you are feeling more chipper (and healthier) than me, have at!DIY Links of the Week 12.12 12.25.11

Wax-coated jeans (for that leather-like look without the leather) are all the rage lately, and Taylor & Demolish did her own DIY pair of wax-coated jeans using paint and gel gloss.  You could also conceivably use real wax (Otter wax, made in Portland, OR!!) like Jennine from The Coveted did in this video.  I love this on-trend look without the high pricetag!

Remember those gorgeous folded over cowboy boots from Free People?  Jen Ell from Jen Ell’s Revenge made her own, and shared the how-to here.  Her version is super-cool; love the chains!DIY Links of the Week 12.12 12.25.11

Removable collars have been trending lately as a way to dress up any outfit…how about trying some removable cuffs instead?  SewPetiteGal has a great tutorial for some DIY studded cuffs that will dress up any shirt, jacket, or dress.DIY Links of the Week 12.12 12.25.11

If you can knit and like bows, try out Craft Magazine‘s Knitted Bow Headband (pattern included).  Sooooo cute!DIY Links of the Week 12.12 12.25.11

Smart n Snazzy has been super-busy with her DIY’s (just scroll through her archive for all the creativity!).  Check out her Kate Spade-inspired City Lights Bracelet, that uses a pretty photo Mod Podged onto a ribbon spool.  And you could use any photo you want – as long as the backing is strong enough!  (Try affixing one to a simple gold cuff for a metallic version!)

Christmas lights broke?  Don’t throw them away…recycle them into quirky-fabulous jewelry!  Ecouterre has the how-to.DIY Links of the Week 12.12 12.25.11

Swellmayde has a quick’n'easy tutorial on a DIY Honorine Jewels Braided Bracelet; a new take on the friendship bracelet that’s been going around awhile.  Just lovely!DIY Links of the Week 12.12 12.25.11

Though I normally stick to clothing/accessory projects in my LOTW, I couldn’t resist including this fabulous video from LOTA Design on Youtube.  8 Design Projects done in Less Than a Minute Each are all quick, simple, and uber-minimalist decor accents for your home, and I can’t wait to try some of them!  Found via Craft Magazine.

If your project was featured above, feel free to grab a button and share the DIY!

DIY Links of the Week 2.13.11A week that had me scrambling with a bunch of projects due at once and my in-laws visiting.  So they never noticed that I neglected to vacuum the house before they came…I met most of my deadlines!  But I have a HUGE one coming up on Friday involving…SOCK PUPPETS…a $6 million budget…and somebody from a Robert Zemeckis movie!!  (I know, I know…it’s a looong story.  Don’t ask.;-)

Ain’t that the truth??! So onto DIY and other awesomeness…

Stina Jimerson created a ring inspired by my DIY Edwardian Cuffs!  It’s so amazingly textural and feminine – yet so strong at the same time.  Definitely scroll through her blog and check out the rest of her amazing work!!

DIY Links of the Week 2.13.11

And, a cool project from a blog run by a MALE DIY-er (Andrew from Pull Teeth…and lord knows there’s two few of you guys out there making non-techy DIY projects!!): a DIY Sunglasses Holder.  Check out all his other DIY projects and inspirational photography on his blog here!

Cut Out + Keep‘s Best 100 Projects of 2010 (as ranked by most favorited).  My Men’s Shirt to Ruffled Shirt tutorial was #13!!  (And check out their Best 100 Projects of 2009 compilation as well…4 of my projects made it to the list at #39, #72, #77, and #88.)  I’m so flattered that so many people favorited my projects – and there’s so many amazing projects to look through, one could get lost in the DIY for days…;-)

DIY Links of the Week 2.13.11

~L~ from Avid Accents posted a great series called “Shopping 101″ in which she offers some great tips to make your buying decisions more informed, less impulsive, and into decisions that truly round out your wardrobe.  First you need to Know Your Style, then Know What You Have, and finally, Know What You Need before hitting the mall.  Invaluable!

DIY Girl Scout cookies.  You can buy the real ones online to support the organization if you want to…or if you don’t have access to them, want to have more, or just want to try your own hand at making them…here’s how.

DIY Links of the Week 2.13.11

I’ve just discovered a new DIY fashion blog called Studs and Pearls.  Check out her DIY faux blazer – refashioned from a Hanes sweatshirt and a beautiful brooch!

DIY Links of the Week 2.13.11

Luxirare made her own dress + jacket pairing for all 5 days of the week in a variety of luxurious fabrics, leathers, colors, and textures.  Not DIY so much as just straight-out off-the-hook design + planning + execution.  It’s amazing that she is able to sew those garments so skillfully without multiple samples/prototypes.  As always, I am in awe.

DIY Links of the Week 2.13.11

I’m loving this No Sew DIY Shirt Dress as posted on Cut Out + Keep by user selena.  So simple…so pretty…so love!  So if you’re not into sewing your shirts into dresses, you can definitely get beautiful results by just tying strategically.

Maya from Soccer Mom Style created these two fabulous projects: her “White Swan Gone Bad” studded clutch, and a DIY Armor Knuckle Ring.  I’m officially drooling over both – she’s so talented!  And check out her blog for many other great DIYs as well!

I've Been Featured on Elle.com Spain!

Written on 12.06.2010 by carlyjcais in Chic Steals Mentions on the Web, Featured in...
I've Been Featured on Elle.com Spain!

(Or is it Spanish Elle.com?)  Well, I don’t speak Spanish, but what Google Translate is telling me is that the above reads:

“Do It Yourself Fever”
Ingenuity and creativity in fashion trump all in times of crisis.
The DIY phenomenon is sweeping the world.

Featured along with other DIY blogger powerhouses such as …love, Maegan, Park & Cube, behind the seams, A Pair & A Spare, the caption under my photo reads:

It is one of the most sought-after jackets so if you have not been lucky, DIY like this blogger.  Blogger Chic Steals shows you a tutorial.

(At least, I think this is what it says…please let me know if I’m totally off-base!)

The tutorial for my DIY Band Jacket is actually here (it’s not linked correctly above or on the site).

Thanks so much, Elle Spain and Paula Llanos García…I truly appreciate the feature and am so excited to be on your site!!
