High-Fashion DIY’s: Quick, Quick!

So Mercedes-Benz New York Fashion Week Fall 2011/12 has commenced and the shows are now well underway…and I’m following the coverage as it breaks.  I’m a little sorry I can’t make it out there this time around, but there’s so much going on here I just can’t tear myself away.  For now, following from a distance will just have to do…and I’m beginning to formulate some ideas for DIY’s straight off the runways for the upcoming Fall season.

However, as Spring is just around the corner here are some luxury-label pieces that have caught my eye…and that you could totally D.I.Y. Here’s the five-second rundown:

Marc Jacobs Tape Sweater

High Fashion DIYs: Quick, Quick!Quick How-To: Attach pieces of white sweatshirt fabric onto the front and back of a loose-knit beige sweater.  Use black Duck TapeHigh Fashion DIYs: Quick, Quick! to disguise the edges of the sweatshirt pieces (and tape another piece on the inside so it won’t stick to your skin through the loose-knit).  Never wash this sweater again!

Miu Miu Tiered Lace Dress

High Fashion DIYs: Quick, Quick!

Quick How-To: Take any mini sleeveless LBD sheath and stitch tiers of lace trim around it.  (I believe this type of lace is called “Venise/Venice Lace” or “Guipure Lace.”)   Sure, it’s fiddly, but it will get you exactly the same look for a whole lot less!

Coach Tangle Ball-Chain Framed Small Bag

High Fashion DIYs: Quick, Quick!

Quick How-To: Use a small clutch purse frame that has holes in it for sewing onto your bag, and attach different types of ball chain, colored chains, oxidized chains, and rhinestone chains to the holes as you sew the bag body onto it.  Alternatively, just use a clutch purse that has the style of frame you like, and attach the chains near the frame using jump rings or threading jewelry wire into the purse body to hold them on.

Haus of Price Jackson Shell Stillettos

High Fashion DIYs: Quick, Quick!Quick How-To: Pick a pair of neutral pumps and add a thick layer of hot glue [gluesticks for general purpose, or for fabric/vinyl crafts if you can find it], pressing tiny shells like these and these into it before it dries.  Do a single small area at a time since the hot glue dries super-fast!  (Yes, this is one of the few times I will actually advocate using hot-glue in a wearable DIY!  Also allowed in hair accessories and brooches.;-)

Coco & Breezy Spiky Studs Sunglasses

High Fashion DIYs: Quick, Quick!Quick How-To: Attach stick-on pyramid nailhead trim around a pair of old-school visor-style sunglassesHigh Fashion DIYs: Quick, Quick!.  Poke holes with an awl into the sides and add cone spikes through the holes.

Alexander Wang Plastic Necklace

High Fashion DIYs: Quick, Quick!

Quick How-To: Two pieces of Crystal Clear shrink plastic, colored with a thin coat of green acrylic paint, cut into a collar-shape and attached with jump rings and chains.  Easy-peasy!

Christian Dior Haute Couture Flocked Dress

High Fashion DIYs: Quick, Quick!Quick How-To: Take a vintage, long-sleeved dress (that’s already stiff) and add colored Craft Flock Fibers to one side of it to get this lovely textural feel.  Trial and error is the name of the game!

DIY in 5: Cage Cuff

DIY in 5: Cage Cuff
Yesterday I mentioned it as a more realistic alternative project to the New York Times‘ labor-intensive 3-hour DIY (!), so today I’m going to show you how to make it. It’s DIY in 5minutes, that is. The easiest, quickest ways to take a piece from blah to fab and update it to current trends.

Wherever I go I’m always on the lookout for clothing, accessory, or jewelry components that can be used in quick ‘n’ simple DIYs. That’s why these silver cuffs I spotted in the jewelry-making section at Jo-Ann Fabrics, from the brand-new Dazzling Geodes line of findings (from Plaid Enterprises) caught my eye. (Technically they’re supposed to be used as a base for adding geode slices and embellishments.) And incidentally, like most of the fashion- and culinary-obsessed, I am a frequent visitor to Luxirare.com. and the Dazzling Geodes cuffs reminded me a lot of the arm-cuffs she sells in her web-store. DIY in 5: Cage Cuff

A Luxirare Cuff.

$95 for one of these cuffs is pretty reasonable considering she designed these and has these custom-cast with embossed LUXIRARE logo, and they look pretty hefty and durable…but if you’re in the market for something similar you can use 2 of these affordable findings to make your own version.

You Need:
DIY in 5: Cage Cuff

*2 silver cuffs from the Dazzling Geodes line (available at Jo-Ann Fabrics & Crafts stores)
DIY in 5: Cage Cuff*silver-colored dead-soft jewelry wire
*wire cutters/pliers

How-To:
DIY in 5: Cage Cuff1. Cut 2 short pieces of wire.
DIY in 5: Cage CuffIf your wire is kinked at all, close the pliers on it and drag in order to straighten it.
DIY in 5: Cage Cuff2. Line the cuffs up side-by-side and wrap a wire piece around the outer edges where the two cuffs meet.

DIY in 5: Cage Cuff3. Weave the wire around the edges (I made a “V” shape as I wrapped), trim the ends down, and use the pliers to push the sharp ends back out towards the outside of the cuff so they won’t scratch you.

DIY in 5: Cage Cuff3. Cut a longer piece of wire and secure the center of where the cuffs meet. Twist the ends around each other on the inside, pull ends towards the outside and trim appropriately.

DIY in 5: Cage CuffYou’re done! And it may have taken you all of 10 minutes.;-)

Wear with minimalist clothing, sharp contrasts, and architectural details…and stay cool, calm, and cagey with this on your wrist.

Free Projects from Michael's and Interweave

So sorry for the slowdown in posts as of late.  I have been consumed by doing the Christmas shopping, putting together boxes of gifts, making goodies and cookies, writing Christmas and New Year’s cards, and standing around at the Post Office that this holiday brings.  I think I have things a little more under control now, but there’s still an overwhelming amount of things to do and get and wrap before next Saturday.

In the meantime, if anyone has any free time and would like to make some jewelry and accessory pieces (maybe as a last-minute gift?), here are some Free Projects from Michael’s:

I Need to Stay Away from the Jewelry Section at Target…

I Need to Stay Away from the Jewelry Section at Target...
Clockwise from top: Stone Bib Necklace; Pyramid Studded Cuff (clearance section); Stretch Rhinestone, Silver Chain, and Oxidized Studded Rings Set of 3; Faux Python Cuff Bracelet with Gold Chain and Embellishments (clearance section)

Like really stay away.  Like we’re talking a blockade and police barricade.

Just a few things I picked up the other day at my local Tar-JAY.

The designer for their jewelry must be new (since I can’t find anything online confirming this, I’m just assuming…) because this stuff rocks.  It’s the only way how I can explain how their jewelry (not the designer-collab stuff, just the regular costume jewelry sold at Target) sometime during the last year went from um, “nice” to “omigawd I want every piece right. NOW!!”

I Need to Stay Away from the Jewelry Section at Target...

I love these edgy cuffs stacked together.  Or apart!

I Need to Stay Away from the Jewelry Section at Target...

And these rings, which can also be worn separately.  Not too crazy about the rhinestone one, which looks kinda cheap IMHO, but I was thrilled to find the studded one since I’ve been on the hunt ever since Forever 21 stopped making their version.  I also love the chain ring.

The nail polish is, too, from Target – O.P.I’s “Here Today, Aragon Tomorrow.”  A dark jade green that is black in some lights and evergreen in others.  It looks so sinister, even more so than I think black does.  But I digress.

I Need to Stay Away from the Jewelry Section at Target...

Ahh, the piece de resistance.  This Stone Bib Necklace just looks so opulent and it elevates any outfit to a major ensemble in a flash.

Plus Target just got Temple St. Clair jewelry in, and I’m loving the ladies-who-lunch feel to their bauble drop earrings and jumbled charm bracelets.  Who’s with me on this one??! I Need to Stay Away from the Jewelry Section at Target...

Might just have to make a trip back, if I can get around the self-imposed barricade…

The Origins of the Sideways Cross Ring: Formspring.me Question

wxtratv.warnerbrofrom formspring.me:

Who came up with the sideways cross ring first? you or madonna/material girl

The Origins of the Sideways Cross Ring: Formspring.me Question
(does the ring above look familiar?  Forever 21, anyone?)
Hmm. The photo above of Madonna is the first time I’ve seen it, to be honest.  (And it looks awfully familiar to me – I instantly thought it was the Forever 21 ring that they had used to style to shoot.)

I highly doubt the inventor was anybody recent. The sideways cross has a rich symbolic history that dates back to the Bible if not earlier; one of the first re-usages of it was in 1821 when it was adopted on the Norwegian flag; and later, in 1883, when The Emblem of the Order was created utilizing a Maltese cross on its side. (source: Wikipedia.org)

By now, there are pretty much no new ideas in fashion; everything is just recycled, reappropriated, updated, and reused. Neither myself, nor Madonna, nor Forever 21 invented the sideways cross ring – my guess is that it probably was seen in the 20th Century sometime in the 60′s or 70′s (maybe in a Black Sabbath poster LOL), and Forever 21 was one of the more recent recylers of this idea.

The 3 Earrings You Can Style Aaannnything With

The 3 Earrings You Can Style Aaannnything With

On formspring.me a reader asked what my 3 favorite earrings are.  Well here they are!  (Sorry I deleted the question by mistake when I went to post it to Blogger.:-(

These are usually the three that I reach for regardless of what outfit I’m wearing.

The oversized rhinestone earrings (from Forever21; no longer sold but a very similar pair here) I wear when I want to go crazy over-the-top glam…and they look surprisingly fun paired with an old t-shirt and jeans.  Plus, for a really formal event (not like I have many to go to!) they’re perfect with an LBD for some retro glam.

The large hoops are light as a feather and I love the tiny star detail at the back.  They’re for when I want to be a little more dressed up but more classic.  (bought in Japan)

The 3 Earrings You Can Style Aaannnything With

The small gold hoops are a recent purchase in Tokyo (LaForet Harjuku though I also found them in another store along Takeshita street there) – I really love secure-post small hoops in gold since I don’t have to take them out in the shower and can sleep with them in, and they still look chic and dressed-up with a number of different outfits.  I love the subtle studding on the surface.  Alas, I found that they have too much nickel in them for my sensitive ears – and the post is a bit too thick, so I’m still debating what to do.  After wearing them for 3 days straight I got a massive infection in my right ear that took more than a week to clear up. *sigh*  Sorry, maybe that’s a bit TMI!

I also tend not to wear earrings that much, since while my hair is short I wear it covering my ears a lot, and it seems kind of pointless to put in earrings when they can’t be seen anyway…

What earrings do you gravitate to?  Hoops, studs, sparklies?
Thanks for your question!

How to Make a Fabric Yo-Yo Necklace

How to Make a Fabric Yo Yo Necklace
 from formspring.me:
Hi! Do you have any tips on how to recreate this necklace? http://img824.imageshack.us/img824/5264/dsc0749.jpg Thanks!
Simple! Fabric yo-yos made out of what looks like light gray chiffon (how to make a fabric yo-yo tutorial here: http://zakkalife.blogspot.com/2009/06/how-to-sew-fabric-yo-yos.html) hand-stitched to one another (you can even see the tiny stitches anchoring them all together in the photo).

Crystal glued in the center of each yo-yo; tiny pearls glued or sewn in a ring around each crystal. I’d recommend using a wide satin ribbon that you can tie around your neck as a closure for the back of the necklace, attaching each side to the sides of your yo-yo cluster.

Hope that helps and have fun making it!

Chic Steal: Curtain Rings to Boho Bangles

Chic Steal: Curtain Rings to Boho Bangles

The other day I was just browsing in my local fabric and notions store, and something in the interior fabrics and curtains section caught my eye.

Chic Steal: Curtain Rings to Boho Bangles

Yes, this little basket.  Full of wooden and antiqued curtain rings for super-large curtain rods.

Chic Steal: Curtain Rings to Boho Bangles

Gold, bronze, and bone craquel enamel carved rings, and dark wooden rings.
It was like a basket full of happiness.

Not that I was really looking for curtain rings.  I just had my cheapskate ‘n’ DIY thinking cap on.

Chic Steal: Curtain Rings to Boho Bangles

These curtain rings are so beautifully unique with the enamel craquelure!  I’ll just remove the eye screws…

Chic Steal: Curtain Rings to Boho Bangles

And now I have a one-of-a-kind pair of boho bangles!

You can also find large rod curtain rings in flea markets, antique stores, and interior hardware shops, so keep an eye out and your cheapskate cap on…
Though at $2.50 apiece maybe Forever21 is cheaper??
