March Sponsor Spotlight: Elinspired on Etsy

March Sponsor Spotlight: Elinspired on Etsy I am so excited to announce to you my newest sponsor for March: el.inspired!

Emma makes pretty, sparkly bracelets adorned with chunky chains and Swarovski crystal, chic leather tassels, elastic hair tie sets, and tiny leather coin purses.  She writes:

I have been making Jewellery for years along with some sewing here and there but never thought about turning it into a business until a couple of years ago when I stumbled upon Etsy & fell in love!! Being a stay at home Mum I was looking for something that I could do for myself while still being at home with my kids, so I decided to take the plunge and in June 2012 I opened el.inspired. I want my store to be a ‘Boutique Accessories’ Store with a main focus on Jewellery. As well as bracelets I am currently working on necklaces, which I hope to add to my collection soon. I love the creativity my business allows me to have and I am so exited for the future!!

Here are some of my favorite pieces from her shop:March Sponsor Spotlight: Elinspired on Etsy

1. Gold Chain and Clear AB Crystal Bracelet, $18.95  /  2. Silver Chain and Azure Crystal Bracelet, (sold now, but similar here), $17.06   /  3. Gold Chain Emerald Cut Crystal Bracelet, (sold now, but similar here) $27.85 /  4. Lilac Leather Tassel Keyring Keychain, $14.97

Stay Warm This Winter with Chic (and Affordable!) Coats From Macy’s

Stay Warm This Winter with Chic (and Affordable!) Coats From MacysA warm coat is a must in the Northern climate I live in (Portland, OR), and it’s tough to find a good coat that goes with a number of different outfits (and that isn’t a huge amount of money).  Of course, something that one wears daily from September-June of the year should be an investment piece, but that doesn’t mean it has to be a significant chunk of change.  If you can time the purchase of such a piece to a seasonal sale, or buy from a retailer that offers great brands at affordable prices, then half the work is already done for you.
I love checking out the coat selection at Macy’s because as a national retailer they carry select brands such as Steve Madden and Nine West, that are both trend-driven but easy on the wallet.  Plus, they offer sales all the time!  (And they’re offering one right now, in fact!!)

Many of their brands (including designers such as Calvin Klein, Michael Kors, Vince Camuto, and DKNY) also offer styles that are exclusive to Macy’s – meaning you won’t be wearing the same topper as 3 other random people at the holiday party.

I fell in love with this two-toned Nine West coat, that I’ve been wearing nonstop since it arrived.  The shape is beautiful and the colorblocking instantly dresses up even the most beat-up pair of jeans beneath.  It’s very high-quality for the price, and the stiff outer wool is withstanding the abuse I throw at it without losing its shape or collapsing.  It’s now my go-to work cover-up, that can go from the studio to a client meeting seamlessly.

For an edgier feel (or dressed-down casual wear), a puffer vest is a great piece.  This Style&Co vest is supremely affordable at just under $41, featuring a removable hood and great hardware details.  It’s perfect as a layer for when it’s not too chilly out, and thrown over or under another coat it’s amazingly toasty.
Ordering from Macy’s online is super-simple (orders over $99 ship free!), and my package even came with a slip to rate their packing job (!).  Macys.com even has this cool feature where you can create a poll of items you like, and share it on Facebook with your friends to get their input.  Social sharing at its most fun!

Now that my personal coat shopping for this season is complete…I can now focus on the next hurdle: Christmas gifts!!  Eeek!
Stay chic~

Back Stateside!

Back Stateside!Somehow managed to get 190 lbs. of things stuffed into 4 suitcases and not get charged for being overweight; coralled up the fam and made it to the airport on time for our 3:30 PM Sunday flight, and was absolutely thrilled to find the SHEL’TTER TOKYO pop-up shop at the Narita Airport to squeeze in some much needed retail therapy before getting on the plane.  Still kicking myself for not buying a pair of suerrow dangling spike earrings when I saw them; at the time I was thinking to jusy DIY them but a 9-hour flight and crazy jetlag later, coupled with Lil Tot waking up every hour last night in tears because he was “too awake to go to sleep!!” has completely fogged up my memory and now I can’t remember how they were constructed.

I did manage to find a beautifully-draped SLY kimono-style neutral jacket and a neon-painted necklace by moussy so will console myself with those; Narita Terminal 1 has heretofore only had boring touristy gift shops or overpriced luxury brand shops, so finding some trendy Japanese fashion stores (in addition to SHEL’TTER, Graniph [offering up trendy T-shirts including a line designed by Milton Glaser], and UNIQLO) literally made my month!

Now have to go grocery shopping to fill up my completely-bare fridge again, and unpack to ward off the exhaustion quickly creeping up on me…

The shoe section is vast, with Designer (high-end) shoes separated for the regular-priced merchandise, and then mixed in on the clearance racks.  In the Designer section I saw Charles Jourdan, Via Spiga, Kate Spade, Ferragamo, DVF, and Stuart Weitzman – and most of the selection could be termed “work-appropriate” – i.e., perfect for the office.

It took awhile, but I finally settled on these pieces to take home with me.  I’m such a sucker for icy gray chiffon and wide-leg denim!!

I was given a gift card worth $100, and I managed to shop smart and stretch it to cover…Nordstrom Rack 75% Off Sale: Like a Treasure Hunt for Deals!

Brand-names!  Huge discounts!  And a full outfit to be had with just a little savvy shopping (though I probably wouldn’t wear it all together at once;-).  So how much did each piece cost me?

Nordstrom Rack 75% Off Sale: Like a Treasure Hunt for Deals!I went the tiniest bit over the $100 because I picked up the golden mustardy-colored tights at the last second.  (I’m feeling it as a trend for Fall!)

I got some pieces I’m really thrilled with – not necessarily because of the designer labels (though that is a perk) – it’s more the quality of each piece and the fact that, at its clearance price, it ends up being worth every penny.  (Likely close to its At Cost price; or how much the company had to outlay to manufacture the piece, meaning that I just purchased these items with minimal markup.  As a consumer on a budget that feels great!)

If you’d like to scoop up some bargains too, head over to a Rack near you (or check them out online), because these huge discounts will only last until September 5!

Is it just me, or is the design of Gap clothing just getting more and more chic?  First it was the black pants in a number of figure-friendly fits in the Premium Pant Collection that we saw last year.  And now for Spring, Gap has stocked sheer, chiffony blouses, sequin-trim tees and toes, metallic Keds, slouchy pants, and drapey cardigans, part of their new Modern + Design collection which launched in stores last month.  (You’ve probably noticed the advertisements for it in the front of the February and March editions of your favorite fashion mags.)  Me likey!  Many of these items could pass for more expensive Banana Republic pieces (but at a Gap price).  I’ve always thought of the Gap as cotton, polos, jeans, and khakis…but I’m definitely rethinking it now!  Whoulda thunk?  I may just turn into a Gap girl yet….;-)

Marshall's and the World of Off-Price Retailing

Marshall's and the World of Off Price Retailing

On Tuesday I had the privilege of attending an event hosted by Marshall’s in Burbank, CA.  I learned a ton about off-price retailing, received a gift, and did some shopping (of course!!;-) and would love to share everything with all of you.

Marshall's and the World of Off Price Retailing
Inside Marshall’s.  Do you see the Cube [the Junior's section] in the background?

I actually had visited a Marshall’s only once prior to the event Tuesday – my local store is a T. J. Maxx (and I usually hit them up every couple weeks or so to see what’s new).  I found a ton of affordable merchandise at Marshall’s, however, in pristine condition from such labels as Ella Moss, Maggy London, Calvin Klein, Siegerson Morrison, J. Brand, 7 for All Mankind, and B. B. Dakota.  And that’s just a tiny fraction of what they had!

First of all, if you haven’t heard of Marshall’s, they are a chain of stores devoted to off-price buying with over 820 locations across the U.S. and Puerto Rico.  Perhaps you’ve seen some of their recent commercials on TV – like the one where two buyers for a store don’t communicate with each other, end up purchasing twice the amount of boots the store ordered, and the extras are bought by Marshall’s at a discount.  Another commercial features a lost cell phone being the reason that a retailer can’t get in touch with her supplier to decrease her order of sweaters – and thus has to get rid of the extra quickly (view on the Marshall’s website above).  This is something that happens every day in the world of buying and selling fashion, and this has given rise to the sector of off-price retailing.

So what is Off-Price Retailing?

Off-price retailers sell their product for less than department and specialty stores – often with the exact same product, exact same brands, styles, and colorways during the current season.

Marshall's and the World of Off Price Retailing
Often the exact same merchandise will be available at the exact same time in both the department stores and the off-price retailers.  The only difference is, the off-price retailer sells it for far less than the department store.

Buyers for retail stores tend to buy seasonally, shopping often 2-3 months ahead of when the clothing will arrive in the store.  (i.e., for Summer, Autumn, Resort, Spring etc.)  They spend only a few weeks during the entire year on such buying trips, often only dealing with certain vendors, and their selection of items can be limited depending on what their clientele buy.

In contrast, the buyers for TJX (the owners of Marshall’s and T.J. Maxx) are on the road 40 weeks out of the year, dealing with more than 12,000 vendors, often buying with a short lead time of only a couple weeks before the items arrive on the selling floor.  They know that their customers comprise a  range of people – from teens to business professionals to parents to those who covet high-end designer brands – and so buy a huge range of merchandise, in different colors, styles, and brands, to meet that need.

Marshall's and the World of Off Price Retailing
Over 10,000 new pieces of merchandise come into a Marshall’s every single week!

Off-Price Retailing is not the same as discount stores.

Discount stores search for the cheapest items to buy, mostly private label merchandise (i.e., made specifically for a store and not sold outside of those stores).  They may carry some designer labels, but the overall value of the items sold is less.  (Think Wal-Mart.)
Off-price retailers search for items that are valuable to begin with and can be discounted further, dealing with both private label and nationally-recognized designer brands, and selling them for 20-60% off what you’d normally pay for the same item at a department store (like Sak’s).

Marshall's and the World of Off Price Retailing
Calvin Klein skirt originally retailing for $59.00 (a conservative estimate) – marked down to $15.00 at Marshall’s!

So what is available at off-price retailers?

Everything!  Though the selection can vary widely from store to store, Marshall’s for instance has a mega-shoe section, a huge Junior’s section, home goods, kitchenware, gourmet food (!), Contemporary Designer ware, men’s clothing, kid’s clothing, toys, books, Women’s clothing, lingerie, Misses’, belts, handbags, and accessories, and sports a wider range of clothing sizes than, say, T. J. Maxx.

Marshall's and the World of Off Price Retailing
The gourmet food section. Lots of coffee too.
Marshall's and the World of Off Price Retailing
Do I spy AHAVA, Escada, Redken, Baylis & Harding, and Rusk?  I think I do!

Once items are no longer “current” they are discounted further and marked clearly with a “Past Season” sticker.

Marshall's and the World of Off Price Retailing
Stylist Alison Deyette [The View, the Today Show] talks about upcoming Fall trends: military, day-to-night, menswear, and layers.

Marshall's and the World of Off Price Retailing
And can we just talk about the fitting rooms for a moment?  The best-equipped fitting rooms I’ve ever been in, bar none.  Double strips of bright lighting on either side of the mirror – a vertical RACK for garments and not just a measly little hook – a stool – and 3 double hooks on adjoining walls with “tomorrow”, “possibly”, and “definitely” labels.  Ingenious!
Shopping at an off-price retailer is all about the HUNT.
Marshall's and the World of Off Price Retailing
I found some really awesome items!

If you are an avid bargain shopper (guilty!;-) you’ll find that visiting an off-price retailer an exercise in restraint.  Unlike, say, a thrift store, you won’t find a Christmas sweater from 1984 or a polyester wedding dress from 5 years ago.  Items aren’t torn, dirty, missing buttons, are otherwise rejects from other stores.  Instead there are so many items that are so affordable and on-trend that I have an incredibly difficult time limitin
g myself.  And, depending on where and when you go, you can find amazing designer pieces for a mere fraction of what they originally cost.  J. Brand jeans for $10?  A Theory dress for $30? Gucci belt for $24.99?  YES!

As all of you know, I do not advocate buying designer brands at retail.  It’s a waste of money!  You’re not only paying for the cost of designing and manufacturing the piece (plus profit for the label), you’re also paying for the immense costs of advertising the brand, as well as inflated “brand cache” and huge markups at the retail store.  (Designer handbags can be marked up over 600% or more!)  Basically, it costs what you, the consumer, are willing to pay!!

So why do it?  If you love brand names, or even love getting quality merchandise for less without having to sift through old, out-of-style, damaged, or dirty pieces – why wouldn’t you try stopping by an off-price retailer and seeing what deals you score?

Marshall's and the World of Off Price Retailing
I think my cart’s about to topple over!

I walked away with a fabulous haul of merchandise…and a challenge with a contest involved…which I’ll be sharing with all of you in an upcoming post!

Thank you so much to the team at Marshall’s and the PR company for having me at the event – I had a ton of fun!

I Need to Stay Away from the Jewelry Section at Target…

I Need to Stay Away from the Jewelry Section at Target...
Clockwise from top: Stone Bib Necklace; Pyramid Studded Cuff (clearance section); Stretch Rhinestone, Silver Chain, and Oxidized Studded Rings Set of 3; Faux Python Cuff Bracelet with Gold Chain and Embellishments (clearance section)

Like really stay away.  Like we’re talking a blockade and police barricade.

Just a few things I picked up the other day at my local Tar-JAY.

The designer for their jewelry must be new (since I can’t find anything online confirming this, I’m just assuming…) because this stuff rocks.  It’s the only way how I can explain how their jewelry (not the designer-collab stuff, just the regular costume jewelry sold at Target) sometime during the last year went from um, “nice” to “omigawd I want every piece right. NOW!!”

I Need to Stay Away from the Jewelry Section at Target...

I love these edgy cuffs stacked together.  Or apart!

I Need to Stay Away from the Jewelry Section at Target...

And these rings, which can also be worn separately.  Not too crazy about the rhinestone one, which looks kinda cheap IMHO, but I was thrilled to find the studded one since I’ve been on the hunt ever since Forever 21 stopped making their version.  I also love the chain ring.

The nail polish is, too, from Target – O.P.I’s “Here Today, Aragon Tomorrow.”  A dark jade green that is black in some lights and evergreen in others.  It looks so sinister, even more so than I think black does.  But I digress.

I Need to Stay Away from the Jewelry Section at Target...

Ahh, the piece de resistance.  This Stone Bib Necklace just looks so opulent and it elevates any outfit to a major ensemble in a flash.

Plus Target just got Temple St. Clair jewelry in, and I’m loving the ladies-who-lunch feel to their bauble drop earrings and jumbled charm bracelets.  Who’s with me on this one??! I Need to Stay Away from the Jewelry Section at Target...

Might just have to make a trip back, if I can get around the self-imposed barricade…
