The Cutest Little Coin Purse Ever! (Felt Handmade Japanese Cookie Coin Case)

The Cutest Little Coin Purse Ever! (Felt Handmade Japanese Cookie Coin Case) Japan is just awash in adorable little accessories and things that can make even the most hardened person want to let out a big ol’ squeeeeee! every so often.

I was able to go to one of my favorite craft stores the other day (Mano Creare in the Futako Tamagawa Rise Mall…which incidentally I’ve written about for Cut Out + Keep‘s Snippets Magazine before)…and couldn’t resist buying a little kit to make a mini felt cookie-shaped coin purse.

Apparently these “Macaron Coin Cases” [read: round and double-sided, like a macaron) are currently all the rage here in Japan and are flying off retail shelves by the dozens (as well as the kits to make them!)The Cutest Little Coin Purse Ever! (Felt Handmade Japanese Cookie Coin Case)(photo collage from Google “Macaron Coin Case” search results)

It took me about 20 minutes, tops, to make.

The Cutest Little Coin Purse Ever! (Felt Handmade Japanese Cookie Coin Case)Now, the finished product is super, super-tiny, so it could only fit like 1 or 2 coins…so is pretty much useless as a coin purse.  But it’s so adorable I couldn’t help myself!

Now I have it hanging from my bag and I just love it!  (Knowing my luck, I’ll probably snag it on something and lose it next time I leave the apartment.)The Cutest Little Coin Purse Ever! (Felt Handmade Japanese Cookie Coin Case)

P.S. Which in fact I did about 5 days after I wrote this post draft.  *Le sigh.*  Oh well, I can just make another one!

Introducing: Chic Steals DIY Patterns! And the Peter Pan Collar Pattern

Introducing: Chic Steals DIY Patterns! And the Peter Pan Collar PatternI’ve been hard at work over the last month or so putting together – you guessed it – a line of DIY printable patterns!

What I truly loved about designing my own line – 5 years ago now! – was thinking up ideas, but the actual manufacturing of a clothing line (in multiples) to sell in stores was where the headaches started.  It was such a huge expense to do, and at the end of it when things didn’t sell, I was left with excess inventory that no one wanted.  All that money, time, and skills wasted; all the fabric and notions no longer usable.  This is an affliction that all clothing lines have, as long as they’re operating via the push manufacturing model; that is, they manufacture the clothing first, and then push it on the consumer after they have the stock and hope that it sells out.  Retailers as big as Forever 21 and The Gap are, season after season, stuck with excess inventory and styles than don’t sell, ultimately to be sold at below cost (less than what it cost to manufacture), donated, or even destroyed (as in the case of H&M).  It’s a huge waste of time, not to mention resources.

I think a different model is what many people are looking for.  Patterns that you can print at home, and either make yourself or bring to a tailor, truly make the experience of creating clothing uniquely personalized to everyone.  It requires a higher investment of time and effort, but in the end you are rewarded with something that you made yourself, that has created little if no fabric waste, and has no leftover unsold pieces at the end of the season.  It can be something you love because of that extra investment, and you can even create it repeatedly, in numerous colors/style for yourself, with minimal cost to you each time.

Thus I decided to launch a line of printable patterns, focused on bringing current trends to all, offering up numerous Variations and Design Ideas for each piece, and making the instructions as easy to follow as possible.  You don’t have to wait for these pieces to come to a store near you…they’re here now, and available at your fingertips.  The only thing missing is a little dose of YOU into each project!

First up:

The sizing is one-size-fits-all [up to a 15 3/4" circumference neck].

Right now I’m beginning the line with accessories, and hope to move on to offer graded patterns at some point in the future.  Here are some features of my line of patterns that differentiate them from the other patterns out there on the market:

  • Current, on-trend styles
  • Meticulous instructions with accompanying photographs
  • Always include a number of variation instructions for each pattern (other patterns usually only offer 1 or 2 variations per pattern)
  • Accurate, vector-based patterns (nothing hand-drawn, sketchy, or lopsided)
  • Affordable prices on-par with other downloadable patterns
  • Licenses available for purchase so that you can use these patterns to create your own line of finished pieces and sell them (like in an Etsy store!)

This pattern (for home usage)  is now available for purchase in my Etsy store for $5.00.  Within 24 hours of your purchase I will email you the pattern and instructions in PDF format.  I’m also available for any questions or support if you run into any issues with your purchased pattern.

Giveaway from Colour Me: 3 Chic Accessories to Complete Your Color Look!

PLEASE NOTE: This post is from November 2011, and after this post was published Colourme.com continued to do business online for a few months. On July 6, 2012 I was alerted by one of my readers that their website has been down for quite some time, and there is no information on where the company went. I have not yet been able to track down the story on Colourme.com, but it’s looking like now the company may have gone out of business. Sometimes online retailing is not a long-lived endeavor.

Project Runway Alum Laura Bennett Blogs DIY for Project Accessory

Project Runway Alum Laura Bennett Blogs DIY for Project AccessoryI’m currently swamped with projects and midterms for my classes, so today I’ll leave you guys with this quickie blog post.

Are you watching Lifetime TV‘s new series, Project Accessory?  I’m on the fence about it (although I do love accessory design!) simply because I’ve heard mixed reviews about it, and have given up on y formerly favorite show, Project Runway, after the move to this network and the meddling of Bunim/Murray with everything that made the show great.  Word has it this permutation of the soon-to-be franchise is still trying to find its footing inamongst the inevitable comparisons and the producers’ fondness for manufactured drama.Project Runway Alum Laura Bennett Blogs DIY for Project Accessory But here’s something neat and DIY-related!  Project Runway alum Laura Bennett (Season 5) is coming out with a book called Handmade Chic: Fashionable Projects That Look High-End, Not Homespun (Jan. 2012), and is blogging for Project Accessory.  Every week she’ll feature a DIY of the winning project, which is really cool!  (Much better than the buy-the-winning-look possibilities that have cropped up from time to time throughout Project Runway’s run…since this democratizes fashion for everyone!).

Check out the first project and follow along with her blogging here:

Has anyone been watching Project Accessory?  What do you guys think so far…must-see TV, or only good enough to read the recaps?

DIY Basket Handbag Ideas

DIY Basket Handbag Ideas I love the idea of using a wicker or straw handbag once the weather warms up.  There’s just something about an airy, earthy bag that spells summer to me.  Using a basket as a handbag reminds me of delightful childhood stories, dressing up as Alice, tea parties, picnics on the lawn…DIY Basket Handbag IdeasAnd baskets are just about everywhere!  Check out a thrift store or a garage sale for the most affordable baskets imaginable.  (Baskets with built-in lids are a lot harder to find, but they’re certainly out there!)  Craft stores like Michael’s or Jo-Ann’s sell them (but for a lot more than thrift).DIY Basket Handbag IdeasThis scan from the May 2011 issue of Ray magazine presents a wonderful assortment of basket-style handbags…and though the prices are something to gasp at, there are oodles of wonderful DIY ideas in there as well.  Dress up baskets with silk flowers, scraps of lace, purse hardware, pompons, paint, ribbon, or gems, for starters.  Add a satin lining, a dried starfish, a vintage brooch, sequin trim, bows, or even a teddy bear’s disembodied head. (!)DIY Basket Handbag Ideas I DIY’d a half-moon clutch a couple years ago, by stitching on some puka shells and adding a little tassel pull and braided trim I made from raffia.

DIY Basket Handbag Ideas So if you can’t find what you’re looking for locally, there’s always Ebay, which is a great source for baskets, straw totes, and wicker clutches.  (Like this one below – which looks oh-so-Chloe S/S 2011!)

The only difficulty is narrowing it down to the one you want!

DIY Leather Obi Belt Idea from Lucky Magazine

DIY Leather Obi Belt Idea from Lucky MagazineSpent a lazy Sunday pulling apart the magazines that have piled up over the past couple months…and came across this Lucky Magazine feature in one of their issues from a little while ago (not sure which one).  Sure, P.S. I Made This did a DIY of the obi-style belt back in February, but this is a little bit of a different style – plus includes some sources for buying the leather.  Here are the sources mentioned in the blurb above:

MJTrim.com

SDTradingCo.com

LeatherUnltd.com

All great sources for leather, but I would also add:

TandyLeatherFactory.com

(with stores throughout the U.S., this is THE place to get leatherworking supplies, tools, hardware, and skins)

SBearsTradingPost.com

(variety of exotic leathers and hides)

JustLeather.com

(includes frogskin and metallic hides)

HideHouse.com

(extremely high-quality, full-sized hides for a variety of end uses)

And, my absolute, all-time favorite:

Sommers.com

(beautiful, amazing array of FAUX leathers and manmade vinyls!!  Yay!)

My Tips: When using lambskin or lightweight leather in a loose, tied belt like in the picture – all you need to do is cut and tie.  (Yay for simplicity!  But don’t ever ever EVER use your the same scissors/rotary cutter you use on fabric on leather…that’s a sure way to blunt your instruments.:-(  Have dedicated leather-cutters if you can!  [I use my kitchen shears that I use to cut other stuff in the kitchen with b/c they're tough and can really withstand the abuse...but I'll never cut fabric with them! LOL])

DIY Leather Obi Belt Idea from Lucky MagazineIf you want a more structured belt, say like Gucci’s S/S 2011 RTW metallic python version with tassels – finishing the edges properly will make all the difference between looking “home-made” and “couture.”  If you’re using real leather, don’t forget to burnish the cut edges!!!  (What is burnishing? you may ask.  A how-to coming in a future post, chickadees!)

DIY in 5: Chiffon Bow Blouse

DIY in 5: Chiffon Bow Blouse Yesterday I coveted it, so today I’m going to show you how to make it. It’s DIY in 5minutes, that is. The easiest, quickest ways to take a piece from blah to fab and update it to current trends.

Also called the pussy-bow blouse on the other side of the pond, a chiffon bow at the collar of any blouse elevates it from everyday into elegant.  But when you’re shopping on a budget (read: buying cheap), often the blouses that are affordable tend to lack such special details.  I thrifted this lovely wide-collar chiffon blouse, but felt it needed an extra something to give it more style.

DIY J. Crew Flowered Neckpiece

DIY J. Crew Flowered NeckpieceI don’t think I ever posted the step-by-step tutorial for this.  Woops!

Inspired by this neckpiece (actually a belt)…from the J. Crew Fall 2009 catalog.

DIY J. Crew Flowered Neckpiece

A very simple, but effectively pretty, DIY.  Seen in this outfit last…last year here.

You Need:
*8″ Pearl-edged Lace Ribbon
*36″ Cream Satin Ribbon
*15″ x 3″ wide cream-colored Scrap Fabric
*8 Assorted Shades of Silk Flowers
*1 Large Pom Pom
*1 Small fabric Rose
*18″ x 6″ wide Peach Satin Fabric

And…
*Sewing Machine
*Needle & Thread
*Hot Glue Gun
*Fray Stop

1. Create the backing for your piece. I used an 18″ x 6″ piece of peach satin voile – and turned the edges under, hemming so as to conceal the raw edges.

2. Cut your satin ribbon in half; stitch the end of each to each side of your fabric backing. Apply Fray-Stop or burn ribbon ends to keep from fraying.

DIY J. Crew Flowered Neckpiece3. Add design elements with a hot glue gun onto your fabric backing. I added the flowers first, then squashed the pompon and small fabric rose (premade) in-between.

4. Create large fabric rose by rolling a piece of cream-colored scrap fabric, securing with hand-stitching. Glue onto backing.

5. Tie pearl-edged ribbon in a bow, and glue onto collar.

DIY J. Crew Flowered NeckpieceYou’re done! You can wear it as a collar/necklace, as shown – or even wear it as a belt – which I love!

Happy DIY’ing!
xoxo
